Pain management is a term which describes any number of methods and interventions utilized to relieve pain and improve quality of life in individuals suffering from acute and chronic pain. Effective pain management program involves cooperation between many health care professionals and specialists. This multidisciplinary approach leads to better, more thorough delivery of care.
Pain management team members include primary care physicians, various other specialists, allied health professionals and alternative/complementary medicine practitioners. Typically, an interventional pain physician establishes a diagnosis using physical examination, review of prior medical history and treatments, then establishes plan of care. Further testing may be necessary; like Xray, MRI, Ultrasound or lab work may follow. Treatment options may include various remedies such as physical therapy, medications, injections, minimally invasive surgery or counseling.
